WHY MIGHT INDIVIDUALS ENGAGE IN A COUNSELLING COURSE? PROGRESSION ROUTE AND SERVICES

Why do people engage in counselling courses?

People decide to engage in a counselling course for a number of reasons; many do so with the mindset to change their career.

Counselling courses attracts people from all walks of life such as: journalists, support workers, hypnotherapists, teachers, nurses and social workers who may want to enhance their communication skills at work, in their personal relationships or simply to gain a better understanding themselves and others. 

 

Progression Route

Please note that there are a range of progression routes within the field of counselling. See below for an overview of a progression route and a brief outline of what is typically covered. (Awarding body: CPCAB).

 

INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING  (10 weeks)                                  .

A basic overview that covers in less detail some of the material on L2 

L2 COUNSELLING SKILLS (18 weeks or 1 year)                                                           .

Level 2 counselling skills mainly focuses on boundaries, communication skills, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, self-awareness, role-play and difference and diversity.

L3 COUNSELLING STUDIES (18 weeks or 1 year)                                                       .

Level 3 builds on from level 2. There is focus on a range of theoretical approaches. At this level students are beginning to link theory to practice, present theoretical presentations and essay writing.

L4 THERAPEAUTIC COUNSELLING (2 years)                                              .

L4 includes all of the above. Students will focus on their core theoretical model and to link theory to practice as well as showing how their interventions have had an impact on the counselling process.  A range of theories and mental health issues are covered. Students need to be in therapy and will be expected to have personal therapy, counsel clients within an agency setting as well as engaging in clinical supervision. By the end of the course, students need to have accrued a hundred client hours.

 

I completed a two year teacher training course with Canterbury Christchurch University in 2005. Within my role as a counselling lecturer I strive to provide a high level of teaching when delivering course content.  I lecture and facilitate workshops in a range of institutions

  • Tuition for counselling students (Learning Reviews/ Journal entries/criteria support/preparation for external assessments/exams)
  • Counselling for counselling students.
  • Listening skills course. (twelve weeks of training for those who might be thinking about starting a counselling course in the future or just             enhancing their communication skills in the workplace or perhaps with friends and family. Suitable for small groups. (I also work                   independently taking bookings from groups, organisations and abroad during school term time.)
